Mango Dhal

A new recipe that I ate at a friend's place last week. It was so yumm, I had to come back and buy mango to try it and let you all know too:-)! This recipe uses sour raw mango and is pretty straight forward to prepare. Boil the dhal with the mango and tadka with your favourite spices! Simple is'nt it?! Let me go over it in little more detail....

Ingredients:

- 1/2 cup toor dhal
- 1/4 to 1/2 raw mango
- 2 or 3 green chillies
- 2 or 3 red chillies
- 1 tsp ghee
- 1/8 tsp of turmeric powder
- cumin seeds, mustard, hing and curry leaves for seasoning
- salt to taste
- finely chopped coriander

Prep time: 5 mins              Cook time: 20 to 25 mins

Preparation:

- Peel the skin of the mango. Depending on how sour the mango is, finely chop or grate either half a mango or quarter of  a raw mango.

- Chop the green chillies and add the chopped mango, chilly and turmeric to the washed dhal.
- For half a cup of dhal add about 1 cup of water and pressure cooker
- Wait for the steam to escape and open the cooker.

- Now, add salt and mash the dhal well. On boiling, the mango you added would blend well with the dhal and will be almost unnoticeable:-)!
- In a pan heat the ghee and add the mustards. Once they crackle add the red chillies and fry them. Later, switch off the heat and add the cumin seeds, curry leaves and hing and fry in the heat before seasoning on the dhal.

- Garnish with coriander. Tasty mango dhal can be had with hot rice and ghee with your favorite pickle and papad! It tastes YUMMMM!


Foot note:

- Add one or two cloves of garlic along with the dhal while pressure cooking for added flavour.
- If you have methi leaves (fenugreek leaves) handy, add some along with the dhal while boiling. Methi will counter the effect of heat from the mangoes:-)!

  3. Looks Yum...Love your recipes..
    I also use 1/2 onion (cut into big chunks)and add it to dal before cooking and use the crushed garlic while seasoning.
